A short history about the house of the Normant Bros.
The Normant brothers were the children of Marie-Anne Marseille (a Villefranche-sur-Cher's innkeeper’s daughter), and Antoine Normant, a sheet manufacturer of Selles-en-Berry. They got married in 1783. The couple lived in humble condition. Father Normant, who setted up in Villefranche, did bad deals and ruined his couple. The family moved to Romorantin which was a local textile center since the beginning of the middle age. He was unable to put the company back on its feet. On November 1803, Marie-Anne Normant got divorced. She had a family of 8 children : at that time the youngest daughter, Victoire Rosalie Normant, was only one and a half years old. The mother ended bringing up her children. Mrs Normant had no money. She was helped by a nephew, Pierre Sylvain Marseille, who created the factory and give her the management. He in fact bought the little workshop and equipments of the ex-husband. She worked with her children, who learned out all about the sheet. Yet, after 10 years of growth existence, the crisis and a risky business accounting of the nephew brought the factory to bankruptcy in 1814. The workshops and equipments that included mechanical machines bought in 1812 from Mr Cockerill in Liège, were sold by auction. It was a loud failure. The children were to start everything on their own...
